Relief Efforts
We’ve all seen how drastically Hurricane Katrina has affected so many in the gulf coast region and beyond. Here are a few stories of how staff and students involved with Campus Crusade have responded.

Marti is on staff and lives in the gulf region. She was supposed to go overseas but her assignment was put on hold. As a result she was able to help run a shelter in Yazoo City, Mississippi. One day, Marti met four firemen from New Orleans. Exhausted, the men told Marti that they probably rescued 10,000 people. Each man has a family, but they haven’t been able to see them. “We have absolutely nothing left,” one man shared. The four grown men sat in front of Marti and just cried.

But Marti doesn’t just listen to the sad stories, she offers hope. One night, she sat down with a couple to explain more about the financial paperwork for getting aid. The woman wanted to know about Marti’s real job. Marti explained that she worked with the college ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. “What exactly do you tell them?” the woman asked. Marti showed her the “Would You Like to Know God Personally?” booklet and they talked about it for awhile. The woman was really excited and said she would look it over that evening.

Clay and his staff team at the University of Alabama didn’t yet have a location reserved for their upcoming Fall Retreat (a weekend away where students hear teaching and are challenged and built up in their faith). The team realized they could take their Fall Retreat on the road to help with the relief efforts. The trip will include some aspects of their regular event seasoned with fresh faith-stretching opportunities. Students and staff members will be challenged to reach out, not only in a spiritual way, but also in a physical way.

“Whether it’s rebuilding homes or cleaning up,” Clay says, “there’s a huge need there physically. And we feel that [helping physically] speaks volumes about how Christ would want us to live out the spiritual aspect of loving others.”

Sleeping Better
Mikayla has started to prove again that she has the ability to sleep for about ten hours straight. (Well, she’s done it the last two nights, so we’re hoping that continues!) Her blog address is now in the lower left corner with our other contact info.
