Staff Conference
We covered over 3,000 miles and 13 states traveling to and from the staff conference in July. It was challenging to travel with the kids and we are so glad to be home. I think it will take some time to process all we heard at the conference, but we wanted to share a few highlights with you.

David was able to do some video camera work and also assisted in directing some of the sessions that were shown on the internet. He received a lot of positive feedback from those who had more experience and is excited to start learning more about video back in the office.

We heard over and over how people connect with stories. Jesus often told parables; much of the Bible is story after story of people’s lives. Campus Crusade is always looking for relevant and effective ways to share the gospel story. One we heard about and experienced uses short films. There are a number of short films that can be shown on the street or in a dorm room setting using an iPod or portable DVD player. Many of the films have messages that relate to the gospel. One of the films, produced by a staff member, portrays a father and his estranged daughter; it’s a modern-day retelling of the prodigal son in Matthew. A few summer projects (including one in Paris, France) used this new method and saw wonderful dialogs happen. We heard how one guy approached a group of students who had been uninterested in hearing the gospel with the 4-laws booklet, but opened up when they watched the films.

Evening sessions at the conference started after the kids’ bedtimes, so Heather stayed home with them. She had time to complete a few oil pastels that were inspired by passages in Isaiah. You can see them and read about them at www.reflectingbeauty.blogspot.com.

Family Update
Elijah celebrated his first birthday August 8. According to the doctor’s measurments, his head is over the 100th percentile for size. Wow, did that year go fast! He’s cruising a lot, eating regular food (instead of mush!), and getting into trouble (today he emptied out a low bookshelf). Mikayla likes going up to people and asking “What’s your name?” She also got to go swimming a few times this summer and loves it! Lately she’s been making up new words to familiar songs like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”
