Working in an office setting is probably not how you picture a missionary. Students who are involved in our ministry understand how it works to be on a campus but don’t know that they can use their majors and skills in ministry. “Preview Weekend” was created several years ago in an effort to help students see the different ways they could minister. Our team regularly does the promotional pieces for this event. A few weeks ago, 40 seniors from various campuses with majors like computer science, human resources, finance, graphic design and others came down for the weekend. The students took a tour of headquarters, and heard from staff about different opportunities here. In past years, we have seen that of the students who attend a preview weekend, ten percent come back to work with us in some capacity.
Devon is a graphic designer on our team who attended one of the first preview weekends. She said,
“It basically opened my eyes to opportunities in ministry I didn’t even know existed. I thought being in ministry meant being “in the field” leading Bible studies and doing initiative evangelism all day, but when I came to Preview Weekend I saw how my skills/talents in graphic design were needed and used to make an eternal impact for Christ.”
We pray that many of the students who visited this year will be called by God to use their gifts with us at Headquarters.
We had heard from our neighbor that he discovered a raccoon in his attic crawlspace. An hour later, we heard scratching from the crawlspace above our kitchen! It seems that the neighbor’s raccoon got scared and found its way into our attic to have her babies. Heather tapped on the ceiling, scaring it out, while I had the garden hose and camera ready. I then chased it around on our roof with a golf club until it got down using a fence. However, the raccoon got back in later that night. A trapper was called and the raccoons were taken out and the roof soffits sealed up to keep out future visitors. We are thankful that this happened now and not three months ago while we were away from home. We thought of the spiritual parallels to our own lives; if we are not on guard things can creep into our lives, causing problems, and the longer left unchecked, the more effort it will take to change later.
Mikayla switched to a “big-girl” bed this month and is doing well–with the exception of a few times she’s fallen out of bed in the middle of the night. Elijah now has two bottom teeth, loves trying new foods, but has not been sleeping as well as we’d like.
